Credit Repair Can Be Painful and Frustrating - Or Not!
By Chris A Smith

In today's economy, increasing numbers of American families are experiencing the pain of a personal credit crisis. Credit card interest rates are up, credit limits are down and many people are seeing their FICO score take a serious tumble restricting their access to credit. When it gets to the point that you can't manage, when you can't seem to make minimum payments and you are receiving collection calls, when you have bad credit you have a personal credit crisis.

This crisis can have a serious impact not only on your financial capabilities but it places stress on other important parts of life such as relationships, your job, even your physical health. The more it impacts your life the more you commit to do something to fix it and therein lies the problem.

Credit is an everyday part of our lives yet most consumers do not really understand how it works. Americans probably know more about the treatment of cancer than they do about repairing their credit. It's no surprise that so many consumers' attempt to repair their credit themselves fails.

When your car needs repair you take it to a qualified mechanic because he has both the knowledge and the tools to fix it. You also know, maybe from personal experience, that it will cost more money and time if you try to fix it yourself. In addition, a reputable mechanic will give at least a limited warranty on the repairs made. In the end you are trading dollars to get access to knowledge and tools to solve a problem.

Credit repair should be viewed in much the same way.

There are any number of credit repair kits, tips, sample letters, forums and other resources available both free or to purchase on the internet. Trying to repair your credit using these resources is like trying to repair your car by reading the user's manual. If you've not done it before it will be confusing, frustrating and extremely time consuming with no guarantee that it's going to be fixed after you are done.

Professional credit repair firms work much like your professional mechanic. They have the knowledge, tools, experience and contacts that can effectively achieve your objective of repairing your credit. Once you engage one of these firms the stress of dealing with it yourself begins to go away. Just knowing that somebody with the right tools and experience is representing you contributes greatly to ending the crisis.

However, like most industries, there are good credit repair firms, less than professional firms and some outright scams. When choosing a firm, check the experience of their personnel, insist on a written fee structure, how long have they been in business and what guarantees can they provide if any. Once you have narrowed the field, check the Better Business Bureau and your state's Attorney General to see if there are any complaints.

Professional credit repair firms leverage your rights under the consumer protection laws to remove questionable, inaccurate or unverified items from your credit report. Having a team that understands how the industry works can result in a greatly improved credit report and higher FICO score. Typically the cost of these firms is less than your cable bill. If you want an improved credit report and access to lower interest rates, then it's time to invest in professionals that can get the job done.
